Boris backs expanded railways
November Issue 2009
Extending the Northern Line, the Docklands Light Railway and the Tramlink networks as well as building the north-south Crossrail 2, forms the centre piece of Boris Johnson’s draft Transport Strategy.
The Mayor of London also backs enhancements to routes outside London to encourage freight to bypass the capital and free up further capacity. The draft also urges the provision of new facilities allowing transfer between road and rail freight in the Thames Gateway and elsewhere in London.
Improvements to the busy Northern Line would see it extended to Battersea, serving the regenerated area around Nine Elms. Further upgrade work will increase capacity through the city. Over a billion passenger journeys are made a year on the London Underground. That equates to the number of passengers carried on the entire National Rail network.
The DLR could reach Dagenham Dock, an area that plays a key part in the Government’s housing plans, and Victoria. Consideration is also being given to creating a Tramlink north-south axis, which would accommodate Croydon’s future growth needs. An expanded rail system in London is at the heart of fresh thinking about transport.
