A new rail junction between Langley and Iver on the Great Western Main Line will link Heathrow Airport directly with the West Country.

Currently passengers must go all the way into Paddington. The future rail link, subject to planning permission, will allow passengers to travel from Reading, via Slough, to Heathrow Airport direct. Under proposals put forward by Network Rail a new railway and three mile tunnel will be built to Heathrow Terminal 5.

The current rail link comes off the main line between West Drayton and Hayes and Harlington station. Inspired by the huge success of the Heathrow Express which opened in 1998 local leaders believe the new rail link will stimulate business in the Thames Valley and the West.

Says Ruth Bagley, chief executive of Slough Borough Council, ‘Studies show that improving access to Heathrow will stimulate growth, and could deliver over £2 billion in economic benefits, over 40,000 additional jobs, and significant environmental benefits.’
