Consultancy firm WSP is working with Coventry City Council to improve capacity at the city’s railway station.
WSP will be looking at the benefits of a second station building and supporting infrastructure to improve UK-wide connectivity and accommodate for future growth.
The station has experienced the highest growth in rail passengers in the last five years outside of London, according to WSP, and a further growth of 100% is anticipated by 2043.
The project is being funded through a mix of external grant funding from the Department for Transport and Local Growth Deal funding from the government.
In 2013, WSP was previously appointed by the City Council to develop a masterplan to increase capacity at the station while preserving its heritage.
This latest stage is to produce a concept scheme design, which will allow the team to produce the final detailed design for the station ready for construction.
WSP stations associate director Jaimal Mistry said, ‘We will deploy the same fantastic team that worked on feasibility for this latest phase of the project. This team has an inherent knowledge and understanding of the details and nuances of the site and associated designs, and have developed a close working relationship with the client team, the programme managers, and key stakeholders.
‘Our understanding of the stakeholder environment and design to date means we can hit the ground running, and are already ahead of the learning curve.’
Coventry railway station was built in the 1960’s and is a Grade II listed building.
