More than 700 jobseekers attended a CAF recruitment day in March.

The Spanish rolling stock manufacturer is looking for around 300 newstarters to fill roles such as logistics specialists, administrative personnel, skilled technicians, production operatives, engineers as well as apprenticeships at its new train factory in Newport, South Wales.

The facility’s structure is now complete and work will commence on fitting it out in time for the production of suburban, metro and high-speed trains as well as trams to commence in autumn.

CAF UK chief operating officer Graham Taylor said that the recruitment day went “well beyond any expectations”.

He added: “Best of all, those who attended had exactly the kind of skill sets or transferrable skills that we are seeking.

“The calibre of candidates was extremely high, and I am confident that we can fill the vast majority – if not all – the roles at the new manufacturing facility by drawing on the talents of the local area.”

Of the 700-plus candidates that attended the event at Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus on March 19, 631 filled out a formal expression of interest application form.

Successful applicants will be invited to meet the CAF recruitment team for face-to-face interviews, with others invited to attend group assessment days.

CAF assessed more than 100 locations across the UK before selecting the Celtic Business Park, Newport, for its 46,000 square metre factory site.

In addition to “significant grant support” from the Welsh Government, CAF is investing £30 million to get the factory up and running.
