Praise for staff after Tube station explosion

Trade union RMT has praised station staff for getting passengers to safety following an explosion on the London Underground.

At around 7:00pm on June 19, a small explosion occurred at Southgate tube station in Enfield, leaving five with minor injuries,

Police officers, a number of ambulance crews and a hazardous area response team from the London Ambulance Service were amongst the personnel called to the scene, with two people later taken to hospital.

The British Transport Police (BTP) said the incident, which is believed to have been caused by a faulty drill battery, is not being treated as suspicious or terror related.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the RMT said: “Station staff were once again fantastic in dealing with the initial incident and getting people to safety whilst undertaking a full speedy evacuation in very difficult circumstances.

“RMT senior stations reps have been in contact LUL managers through the evening and today and a review of the incident will now take place.

General secretary Mick Cash added that it is “absolutely right and correct” that the station’s staff  received praise for their professionalism in the face of the incident.

In relation to the incident, the BTP has arrested a 23-year-old man from Enfield on suspicion of doing an act likely to cause an explosion to injure or damage property, and endangering safety on the railway.

He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
