Officers from the Royal Military Police (RMP) will join BTP on patrol at Liverpool Street and Waterloo stations as part of a new partnership.
By shadowing transport police at two of the country’s busiest railway stations, it is hoped ‘the Redcaps’ – a military branch that upholds law within the Army – will gain first-hand experience of wider policing.
The arrangement is also designed to share skills and help keep passengers safe.
BTP Superintendent Matt Allingham said an initial pilot at Waterloo was “a big success” and that he hoped to roll the scheme out further in the future
Supt Allingham added: “This is a great, practical way to bring two specialist police organisations together to share expertise and enhance what we do.
“There are clear benefits brought by the increasing uniformed visibility at our key transport hubs in relation to crime prevention. The uniqueness of having joint military and police personnel on patrol also provides a conversation starter with the travelling public and assists with engagement in line with NPT [Neighbourhood policing teams] principles.”
Major Michael Boyd, Officer Commanding 156 Provost Company, 4 Regiment RMP, said the partnership will provide “exciting professional development opportunities” for colleagues.
