Local employer, The QTS Group, is opening its doors to aspiring apprentices with a special open day held at its Drumclog HQ.

Taking place between the 27th – 29th July 2021, young people are now being invited to register for a place to come and learn about the QTS workshop and the process involved in becoming a fully qualified plant fitter.

The young people will have the opportunity to see around the company HQ at Rench Farm and hear from some of the team, including previous and current apprentices.

This four-year apprenticeship with QTS, an Investor in Young People Gold Award employer, is the perfect pathway to learn how to maintain the bespoke plant machinery created and utilised by QTS on the railway.

Alan McLeish, Managing Director of QTS Group said:

“An apprenticeship is a terrific way to enter the rail industry and to learn skills that will help you progress through a rewarding career.

“At QTS, we are passionate about our plant machinery, and we are looking for young people who will share that enthusiasm and become part of the new generation of fitters within our business.”

Over the course of a four-year period, apprentices will combine practical work and study to become a fully qualified plant fitter. At the end of the apprenticeship, the fitter will sit their RPA Assessments which will allow them to carry out repairs and servicing to Rail Plant without supervision.

Andrew Pitt completed his plant fitter apprenticeship in 2020. He said:

“The railway industry has so many opportunities and it has been great for me to take advantage of this at QTS over the last five years. I enjoy working with the machinery and with the more senior fitters who have mentored me.

“I would definitely recommend QTS as an employer, especially for a young person looking to take up an apprenticeship. Working within the workshop team has been a great experience for me and the fact that the company is so innovative in plant and always looking to develop and move forward, means that there is always something new to learn and to challenge you.”

To be considered for the QTS Apprenticeship Scheme, applicants must hold the following Academic qualifications or their recognised equivalents –

  • National 4 (Minimum) in English
  • National 4 (Minimum) in Mathematics
  • National 4 (Minimum) in Science

The Apprentice Open Days will be held on the 27th, 28th and 29th of July from 4pm – 630pm and in accordance with the appropriate COVID guidance from the Scottish Government.
