The international children’s charity Railway Children is gearing up for its latest Rail Aid event, inviting participants to tackle the Tissington Trail as part of its Walk the Line challenge. Taking place on Saturday 16 October, and sponsored by KPMG and Thales, the event will help support children around the world.

The Tissington Trail follows the route of the former Buxton to Ashbourne railway line, and runs 13 miles from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, through the beautiful countryside of the Derbyshire Dales.

Built as part of the London and North Western Railway, the Buxton to Ashbourne railway line opened in 1899 and closed in 1967. Once the track was removed, the route was transformed into a traffic-free recreational trail and opened to the public in 1971. It is mostly flat, ideal for walkers and the signal box at Hartington Station has been preserved so you can go inside and see how it worked.

Participants can choose to call time after the one-way, 13-mile walk or turn back and return to the start to clock up 26 miles in total. Either way there’ll be food and drinks offered at the 13-mile point and a return minibus will be provided if one way is enough.

Railway Children is raising vital funds to support vulnerable children across the UK, India and Africa. This year’s fundraising activities include a number of challenges to get involved with and raise money for the cause.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a dire impact on fundraising over the past 18 months. Despite this, in the past year, Railway Children has helped to protect 15,822 children across their numerous projects in East Africa, India and the UK. 5,160 children have been safely reintegrated with their families and 10,793 young people have been supported through the charity’s outreach activities.

Railway Children aims to raise £500,000 this year, and every participant is vital to achieving this goal. To sign up to the Walk the Line event, individually or as a team, visit www.railaid.co.uk/fundraise-for-us/walk-the-line/.
