Rail managers shoulder a distinct set of pressures. While every role contributes to keeping the network moving, it’s managers who bear the responsibility for guiding well-coordinated teams or delivering projects on schedule and within budget. It’s a demanding role and the RailStaff Awards honours these seasoned professionals.
The Rail Manager of the Year Award recognises an outstanding individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication to their team. Each nominee goes beyond expectations to support their colleagues, improve performance, and drive excellence in the rail industry.
Richard Tandy, an on-board supervisor manager at GTR was astonished to be honoured with the title at the 2025 RailStaff Awards.
Richard is responsible for the coordination of Southern and Gatwick Express on-board supervisors across the network. He drives operational improvements, implements practical solutions, and ensures teams are informed and confident. His calm, decisive leadership, attention to detail, and ability to balance operational priorities strengthen staff performance and enhance service delivery across GTR’s operations.
“I’m overwhelmed,” said Richard on receiving the award. “I know it’s my name on the trophy, but it’s not about me. It’s about the teams that I lead. They’re the ones who are out there making a difference every single day. I just try them give them the tools that they need and support them when things don’t go quite according to plan.”
“I’d like to thank Mark Franklin for nominating me in the first place, and all of my colleagues, friends, and family for voting for me to get to this stage. I’d also like to thank my much better half, Sarah. She encouraged me to apply for my first conductor’s job eight years ago and she’s supported me all the way through my career. I wouldn’t be here accepting this award without her.”
