Our industry is lucky enough to include thousands of staff who’ve devoted their entire working lives to the railway. Many of those now reaching retirement age can boast decades of dedication and it’s not unheard of for employees to leave with 50 years or more under their belt.
It’s understandable, then, that one of the most prestigious prizes at the RailStaff Awards is that taken home by individuals who’ve provided the industry with a lifetime of stellar service.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises those who’ve devoted so much time to delivering excellence for the benefit of customers and colleagues alike, who’ve displayed a career’s worth of commitment, and a willingness to go that extra mile.
It honours those whose contribution to the industry has left a lasting legacy for colleagues, customers, and future generations.
Top technology company Telent, a stalwart supporter of the RailStaff Awards, has stepped up once again to sponsor this coveted award.
As a specialist in the design, build, and management of the UK’s digital infrastructure, Telent draws on decades of experience in mission critical communications and technology. Tracing its origins right back to Guglielmo Marconi – the man who laid the basis for radio technology – the company enables organisations to create, improve, and operate the networks that their businesses and customers depend on.
With a strong focus on key customer areas including transport, emergency services, network providers, and the public sector, Telent is a trusted partner of many organisations in the UK rail industry, including Transport for London (TfL), Network Rail, Transport Scotland, and leading train operators and infrastructure companies. Its sponsorship of this award is particularly fitting, given that the company itself has provided a lifetime’s support to the industry.
Lifelong commitment
In 2025, then Freightliner CEO Tim Shoveller was honoured with the award.
Throughout a 30-year railway career, Tim has helped shape the industry’s evolution. Rising from trainee guard at Guildford to CEO of Freightliner, he has championed innovation, integration, and collaboration across passenger and freight sectors.
Tim’s work in developing new freight services and supporting the Railway Benefit Fund reflect a lifelong commitment to progress and community. His inclusive leadership style continues to inspire colleagues, strengthen teams, and drive lasting change across the railway.
Presenting the award, Telent Rail Director Kevin Bonanno said: “It is incredible to see the dedication and commitment of those who are shaping the future of rail at the RailStaff Awards.”
“The evening is a great opportunity to recognise those individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond to keep our railway running safely, which is why Telent is honoured to be one its sponsors.”
We thank Telent for its longstanding commitment to supporting the RailStaff Awards and for helping us celebrate the remarkable individuals whose dedication and service have left an enduring mark on Britain’s railway.
