Workers once rested in this tiny hut in Liverpool Lime Street station’s tunnels

Network Rail has lifted the lid on a secret spot located deep in the tunnels of Liverpool Lime Street station.

Once used as a place where track workers would take their tea breaks, the 100-year hut is no longer accessible when trains are running.

With the onset of theĀ final major phase of the grade II-listed stationā€™s transformation, engineers had the opportunity to pass along the track and take a photo of the historic hut, which has a fireplace, an old kettle, cups and tongs.

Network Rail project manager Graeme Whitehead said: “In years gone by track maintenance gangs would have come here, theyā€™d have had their lunch, a cup of coffee, lit the fire, and waited in-between trains.

“We have no plans to do anything with it, it will stay here, itā€™s protected beneath the tunnels and will remain locked in history forever more.”
